Course Details
Cuscowilla was one of the first projects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw took on after Sand Hills, the course that established their reputation, and it stands apart for its lakeside setting on Lake Oconee. Unlike many architects who would have sought dramatic water holes, they recommended reserving most of the shoreline for homes and instead routed the golf across the rolling uplands, which they believed offered more character. Only two holes play along the lake—the Cape-style 10th with a downhill drive across an inlet and the short par-3 11th to an elevated green—but the upland holes give the course its strength. The opening stretch is especially notable, capped by the drivable split-fairway 5th, now considered a template par 4, while the closing run of 15 through 17 provides another memorable sequence. The project also introduced shaper Jeff Bradley’s distinctive style of ragged-edged bunkers carved into Georgia’s red clay, giving the course a bold and lasting identity.
