Loblolly, located just a mile from the Atlantic Ocean in Hobe Sound, Florida, sits on a compact, triangular plot of land and presents a formidable challenge through its Pete and P.B. Dye design. Strategy is everything here, with angled approaches often required to access the course’s narrow, sloping greens. Built in the late 1980s, the Dyes creatively used sand from the site’s retention ponds to shape flowing fairways and build 40-foot dune ridges that frame holes and elevate green complexes. Standout holes include the eighth, a double-dogleg par 5 with a massive bi-level green tucked beside water; the short par-4 13th, with its green set in a sandy hollow behind tall pines; and the 14th, a bold take on the classic Alps hole, where a ridge hides the green from view. The par-3 16th adds drama late in the round—shots missed short and right drop into a deep bunker well below the green.
