Course Details

A.W. Tillinghast began designing the Upper and Lower Courses at Baltusrol in 1919, replacing the club’s original 18 holes. This project marked the first time in America that two 18-hole courses were built simultaneously. It was the Upper Course, not the Lower, that hosted the club’s first U.S. Open (and the third in Baltusrol’s history) in 1936, with Tony Manero emerging as the champion. Baltusrol Mountain, though only 200 feet tall, rises on the right side of the Upper Course, influencing both drives and putts with its sloping terrain, which is steeper than it appears. In late 2023, Gil Hanse and his team began renovations on the Upper Course, continuing the restoration work they had started on the Lower.

ALS Therapy Development Institue

1 Day. 100 Holes. 24 Golfers. 1 Cause.

On Tuesday, June 17th, 24 people who have been impacted by ALS embark on an extraordinary endeavor: to play 100 holes of golf in a single day. To raise awareness for ALS and support the vital efforts in ALS support, care, and research—all in the hope of beating this devastating disease once and for all.

Cory Sullivan and Alex Litt, whose fathers were both impacted by ALS, reconnected by chance in Branson, Missouri—each on separate golf trips with friends. Though they had been close during their time in New York, life had taken them in different directions after moving away from New York. Cory lost his father, John, to ALS in 2009. A decade later, Alex’s father, Marc, was diagnosed with ALS. Alex and Cory talked on the phone regularly about ALS's impact on their families and both of them turned to golf as an outlet.

In 2022, while walking a course and standing on the 4th hole at Onion Creek, they began talking about how golf could be a way to raise awareness and build a community for ALS. What began as a conversation has since become a movement—uniting people across the country at the intersection of golf and ALS, with one mission: to build a community of people affected by ALS and raise meaningful funds for support, care, and research through leading ALS organizations.
