Course Details

Newport Country Club, situated in Newport, Rhode Island, is one of the oldest and most renowned golf clubs in the United States, established in 1893. In 1894, the club made history when its original nine-hole course, one of the five founding members of the USGA, became the first-ever championship venue in the U.S., hosting both the inaugural U.S. Amateur and the first stroke-play U.S. Open Championship in 1895. In 1899, William T. Davis expanded the course with the addition of a second nine. A.W. Tillinghast, one of golf’s great architects, remodeled the layout in the 1920s, creating a design widely regarded as the most authentic links-style course Tillinghast ever crafted. Interestingly enough, Newport has never had a fairway irrigation system.
