In its early days, Blue Hills welcomed icons like Bobby Jones, Opal Hill, and even former President William Howard Taft to its fairways. As the original site began to feel its age, the membership voted to relocate in 1962, establishing the Club at its present home and adopting the name Blue Hills Country Club. The new championship course, laid out by Robert Dunning, stretched to an impressive 7,300 yards—making it one of the longest layouts in the nation at the time. Blue Hills has long embraced its role in advancing the game, perhaps most notably by hosting the Children’s Mercy Hospital Golf Classic for 25 years under the leadership of Tom Watson. The event drew legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, and many other top professionals in support of Watson and the Kansas City community. Fittingly, Blue Hills also played a role in Watson’s own rise, as he captured the Kansas City Men’s Match Play Championship here at just 14 years old, fueling his dream of becoming a professional golfer.
