Pete Dye began shaping Links at Perry Cabin in 2015, and, even as memory loss soon forced his retirement, the 93-year-old Hall of Famer’s inventiveness shines through in what stands as his final cradle-to-completion design. Working with his son P.B., he replaced a modest 1971 layout he’d done with his brother Roy with a far livelier course for guests of The Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, Maryland, about an hour from Annapolis. The holes echo favorite Dye themes without becoming a “greatest hits” reel: a diagonal fourth green that recalls Crooked Stick’s 13th; a sweeping par-5 14th curling along a strip bunker like Whistling Straits’ fifth; and an island-green 17th that mirrors TPC Sawgrass—larger target, ring of rough for mercy. There’s even a Biarritz at the seventh, a nod to Macdonald and Raynor added at owner Richard Cohen’s request. The closer, a 487-yard, C-shaped par 4 wrapping a vast lake, evokes the Waterloo hole at The Dunes in Myrtle Beach—an almost cheeky final bow to Robert Trent Jones, whose style Dye once vowed to counter.
